- History of the association:
The association has been set up in 1990 when due to
the Revolution of December 1989 the liberty of speech and association became possible.
Members of the Association are intellectuals,
peasants, craftsmen, traders from Timisoara and localities of south-western Romania (of
the counties of Timis, Caras-Severin, Mehedinti) subjected to the
deportation regime of June 18, 1951.
To the Association belong Romanians, Germans,
Serbs, Bulgarians, Hungarians, Jews, Aromanians. AFDB (Association of the Former Deportees
in Bărăgan) is a non-governmental association, non-profit that proposed to promote the
social rights of the persons who suffered the horrors of the deportation in Bărăgan in 1951.
The Association militates for the reconsideration
of the contemporaneous history values and of the multiethnic traditions of Banat.
Within the documentary-publishing activities AFDB
performed and extended the research in archives in order to organise a database and the
deportation documents. This work has been materialised through the editing of books and
through documentary films. At the commemoration of 45 years from deportation, in 1996, the
Association built the Deportation Monument located in the Justice Park of Timisoara.
Chronologically, the activity of AFDB materialised as follows:
- In 1993 together with the TV producer
Lucia Hossu Longin there have been made within the documentary series The Memorial
of Pain two films: Deportees from Bărăgan, broadcast on the national programme
TVR1.
- 1994 - appears the book Whitsuntide
51 - Fragments from the deportation in Bărăgan by Viorel Marineasa and
Daniel Vighi, Marineasa Publishing House released in the West University of
Timisoara in the presence of numerous students and former deportees. The book has been
distinguished with the Prize of Association of Writers from Timisoara.
- 1995 - photo exhibition Bărăgan
1995 - its inauguration took place in the Museum of Banat in Timisoara; the
exhibition included one hundred photographic works and the album Photo-memory of a
deportation made by architect Mihai Botescu.

- 1996 - it has been unveiled the Monument
of the Deportees in Bărăgan in the presence of the citys authorities and of
numerous inhabitants. It is released the book Deportation in Bărăgan. Destines,
Documents, Reports by Viorel Marineasa, Daniel Vighi and Valentin Sământă in
Mirton Publishing House. The book has been awarded the prize of the
Tomis magazine and of the Branch of Dobrogea of the Writers Union.

- 1998 - it has been released the volume
Deportation Camp. Pages of the Bărăgans camp of professor Rafael
Mirciov, he being himself deported with his family, Mirton Publishing House.
The book presents the deportation history of the community of Bulgarians in Banat. The
book release has been followed by the inauguration of the exhibition of oil paintings and
graphics of Mrs. Petronela Tölgyi - Ganciov and Doctor Petru Augustinov. Also in this
year has been made the documentary film Returning Home directed by Iosif
Costinas. The film could be seen in Timisoara, in the Adam Müller Guttenbrun
House of Culture. The national premiere of the film took place in the French Cultural
Institute in Bucharest.
- In the year 2000 ADFB received in the name
of Romanias President, Emil Constantinescu the medal and diploma for 10 years for
fight for democracy. The distinctions are the reward for the efforts made in the
establishing of democracy and the finding of the historical truth.
- In 2001
with the occasion of commemoration of 50 years
from deportation, it has been released the documentary book Deportees in Bărăgan
1951 - 1956, co-ordinated by the President of the Association, Eng. Silviu Sarafolean, Ph.D. candidate.
The book has been made with the support of a students group of the Faculty of
Political and Administrative Sciences of the Banatul University and the
Faculty of Law of the Western University of Timisoara.
- In perspective, the Association has in
view the editing of other books related to life in deportation, with social-economic and
educational aspects regarding the experience of children and adolescents. Another project
is the one that relates to the set up of an anthology of literary works having as theme
the deportation.
